AT-6 RACING!!

Members, our AT-6 Air Racing was created to promote Air racing that is Fun  and Affordable to those who crave the thrills of R/C Racing without the costs associated with the Giant Scale classes.

The concept of this event is to create an environment that is friendly to all skill levels of R/C pilots.  Every effort has been made to keep the hardware and equipment as equal as possible as opposed to making them FASTER. As of late, Jimmy is the only club member who wants more speed!

If you are looking for something new, this may be the ticket. It's low cost, but high excitement!

AT-6 Races

The rules are very simple;

1. The aircraft must be built from a House of Balsa AT-6 kit.

2. Modifications that change the shape are NOT allowed. Modifications to lighten the structure are allowed. If the plans show control surface as moveable (two ailerons, both sides of elevator and rudder they must be moveable. (see 5A) . If the plans do not show fillets, fairings, or any formed structure to improve the aerodynamics they will NOT be allowed.

3. Fuselage

  1. Tail surfaces can be shaped to an airfoil but must be made from balsa.

  2. Cowl can be made from wood (per plans) or a soft drink bottle or Rubbermaid #7 microwave container.

  3. All aircraft must race with a cowl.

  4. Canopy supplied with the kit must be used as supplied, no modifications allowed.

  5. Pilot figures may be of any type and are optional.

4. Landing gear

  1. Gear legs are to be made from no less than 3/32 diameter wire.

  2. Gear shall be located in accordance with plans but can be modified to have wheels to      outside.

  3. Gear doors can be eliminated

  4. Main wheels must be a minimum diameter of 2”, streamlined wheels not allowed.

  5. Tail wheel, No restrictions (can be eliminated if desired)

5. MINIMUM WEIGHT IS 2 ½ POUNDS (without fuel). No Maximum weight.

  1. Aircraft must have proportional control of throttle, both ailerons, rudder and elevator on 4 separate servos. Ailerons may be controlled by two separate servos. Engine must be capable of being shut off in flight.

6. Engine

  1. The engine used is an O.S. 15LA or FP. No rework, modification or blue printing of engine will be allowed. Worn or damaged parts must be replaced with stock factory parts.

  2. The muffler can be modified by removing the baffle, no other modifications are allowed.

  3. Muffler pressure to tank is allowed, crankcase pressure is not allowed.

  4. Fuel tank can be any configuration, size or manufacture.

  5. Props shall be Master airscrew 8X4 composite fiber without modification. Balancing is permitted. (No wood props)

  6. Fuel can be no higher than 15% nitro mix

  7. No on board glow system allowed

7. RACE COURSE AND ORGANIZATION

  1. The course will be run about two pylons set 300 feet apart. (set beyond fence line)

  2. Each race will consist of a maximum of four aircraft, with ten laps around the pylons.

  3. Racers shall have a maximum of 90 seconds to start their engines at the starting line.

  4. No down field retrieving to restart engines once the race has started. (safety reasons)

  5. Starter will announce start of race. (Since our winds come out the West take off will be into the wind, circle and when starter has all planes in position, flag to be lowered and race starts.)

  6. Race course will be turns to left.

  7. Pilots may have callers if desired.

  8. There will be a judge stationed a safe distance from each pylon to call for cuts. Prior to each race contestants will identify to the judges the color scheme of their individual aircraft.

8. Points and penalties

  1. Points will be awarded as follows; 1st place 4 points, 2nd place 3 points, 3rd place 2 points and 4th place 1 point.

  2. For every cut of the pylon one position point is lost. Example would be individual in first place cuts a pylon would drop to only 3points at end of race, but 2nd place winner would move up to 1st place and be awarded 4 points, 3rd place would still be awarded 2 points and 4th place would get 1 point. If an aircraft ends in 3rd place and cuts a pylon the results would be a score of 1 point. Multiple cuts would result in subtracting number from final position standing, which could result in a zero score.

  3. Final standing in race shall be position at end of race minus any penalties from pylon judges.

  4. Aircraft must complete course to be awarded any points. Not finishing 10 laps will result in a zero.

Please remember this is a fun event and please do not bend the rules. If there are some rules which the majority of the membership want to discuss it shall take place at the pilots meeting.
